How wello works

A plain-English guide to what Wello is, what’s allowed, how you get paid, and how we keep everyone safe — without holding your sensitive details.

Our mission

wello exists to help people gather in real life — and to let the people who do it well earn from it. The best experiences don’t come from an algorithm; they come from a host. Our job is to give every host the tools, the audience and the trust to fill a room — and to help everyone else find their people, close to home.

We’re starting with hosts because they’re the heart of it. A neighbour running a supper club, a coach leading a Sunday run, a studio opening its doors on a quiet weeknight — Wello is where they can turn a good idea into a full room, and eventually into real income. Guests get somewhere trustworthy to discover what’s on near them and actually show up.

What we aim to build: the warmest, most trustworthy way to gather locally — where hosting is something you can be proud of and grow, and where walking into somewhere new feels safe.

The basics

What wello is, and how it works

Wello is a place to host and find real-world experiences near you — supper clubs, run clubs, workshops, tastings, watch parties and everything in between. Anyone can host. Guests browse a live map of what’s on nearby, request to join, and show up. Experiences can be free or ticketed.

If you host

From idea to full room

  1. Create it — pick what you’re hosting, add photos, set a price and capacity.
  2. Set your rules — free or ticketed, how big, and who can join — you can even ask for verified guests only.
  3. Approve your guests — you decide who’s in. Every request is yours to accept.
  4. Host & get paid — payouts land in your bank automatically after your event.
If you join

Find your people nearby

  1. Discover — browse a live map of experiences forming near you.
  2. Request to join — send a request; the host approves you.
  3. Show up — check in and enjoy the experience.
  4. Rate it — two-way ratings keep the community honest.
Know who you’re meeting

Every host shows who they are

So guests always know what kind of room they’re walking into, every experience shows the kind of host behind it.

Community

A neighbour hosting for the love of it

Ordinary people bringing folks together — usually free or low-cost, personal, open to their circle. The heart of Wello.

Independent

A regular host who’s made it their thing

The supper-club chef, the run-club lead, the workshop teacher — locals who host often and earn from what they love.

Partner

A trusted venue or pro organiser

Established businesses and venues, verified as who they say they are — so a ticketed night is exactly what it looks like.

Money, made simple

Getting paid & the fees

Free experiences are always free — no fee, ever. When you sell tickets, you keep 90% and Wello keeps a 10% platform fee. That’s how we keep the lights on and the free side free.

You’re the merchant of record

When you charge for an experience, you are the merchant of record — in plain terms, you’re the one selling to your guests. It’s your event, your price, your relationship. Wello isn’t reselling your ticket; we provide the platform and the payment rails and take a small fee for it.

This keeps things honest and clear: guests pay the host directly, and the host is the one responsible for delivering the experience they described. You stay in control of your own thing — we just handle the plumbing.

Why we use Stripe

All payments run through Stripe — one of the world’s most trusted, regulated payment companies. Stripe handles the card details, the payouts to your bank, fraud protection, and the financial compliance that comes with moving money.

We use Stripe on purpose, so that: your card and bank details are handled by a licensed financial institution — not by us — and hosts get paid reliably, securely and on time. It’s the same infrastructure that powers some of the biggest companies on the internet.

Verified identity — for everyone’s comfort

We ask you to verify your identity once — for anything involving money (hosting or joining a paid experience), and whenever you join an event where the host has chosen to welcome verified guests only. Here’s why, and exactly how we protect you:

  • Trust for everyone. Knowing the person hosting (or joining) is a real, verified individual makes hosts comfortable opening their doors, and guests comfortable showing up. It raises the floor for the whole community.
  • Accountability keeps bad actors out. When people are verified, they’re answerable for how they behave — which makes Wello a safer place to meet strangers who become friends.
  • We never see or store your documents. Verification is done entirely by Stripe Identity, a regulated third party. Your ID and selfie go straight to Stripe — Wello only ever receives a simple “verified: yes” back. We hold none of it.

This is deliberate. The less sensitive data we hold, the safer you are. Your identity documents, your card, your bank details — they all live with regulated experts (Stripe), never on our servers. Wello keeps only what it needs to run the app: your profile and your bookings. If there’s ever a genuine safety or legal need, verified identity can be retrieved from Stripe under strict controls — but it’s never sitting in our database waiting to leak.

Cancellations & refunds

Life happens. Free experiences are easy to leave; paid ones are refunded fairly, on rails you can trust.

If you’re a guest

Cancelling a spot

  1. Free events — just cancel, no charge, no fuss.
  2. Paid events — refunds follow the host’s policy (Flexible, Moderate or Strict), which you always see before you pay.
  3. If the host cancels — you’re refunded in full, automatically.
If you’re a host

Setting your policy

  1. Choose a policy — Flexible, Moderate or Strict when you create a paid event; guests see it up front.
  2. If you cancel — your guests are refunded automatically, no admin for you.
  3. Refunds run through Stripe — money goes back to the guest’s original card, securely.

The exact refund window for each policy is shown on every event, so there are never any surprises.

Your data

What we keep — and what we don’t

We hold the minimum needed to run the app, and leave the sensitive stuff to regulated experts. We never sell your data.

What we store

  • Your profile — name, photo, bio, city, interests
  • Your events and bookings
  • Messages, ratings and reviews
  • Basic account & app settings

What we never store

  • Your ID documents or selfie — held by Stripe
  • Your card numbers — held by Stripe
  • Your bank details — held by Stripe
  • Nothing is sold to advertisers, ever

Your controls

  • Edit or delete your info any time
  • Make your profile private
  • Control notifications & activity sharing
  • Delete your account and data whenever you like

Trusted third parties help run Wello — Stripe (payments & identity), a maps provider (to show what’s nearby) and push notifications. Each only gets what it needs to do its job.

Good to know

Frequently asked

Anyone with an experience worth showing up for — as a Community host, an Independent, or a verified Partner venue. We keep the bar high with identity verification for anything paid.

Joining is free, and free experiences stay completely free. When you sell tickets, you keep 90% and Wello takes a 10% platform fee — that’s it. No listing fees, no subscription.

It’s a one-time check, needed in two cases: anything involving money — hosting or joining a paid experience — and joining an event where the host has chosen to welcome verified guests only. It’s done by Stripe Identity, a regulated third party. Wello never sees or stores your documents; we just get a “verified” confirmation back.

You’re the merchant of record, so guests pay you directly through Stripe. Payouts land in your bank automatically, typically within a couple of days of your event.

If a host cancels, guests are refunded in full, automatically. If a guest cancels, refunds follow the event’s cancellation policy — which is always shown before booking.

No. Wello is about gathering — real experiences with real people nearby. Anything to do with who you’re hoping to meet is opt-in only; the default is simply finding your people and good things to do.
