What it actually covers
Public liability insurance (PLI) covers you if a guest is injured or their property is damaged at something you run, and they hold you responsible. It typically pays legal costs and compensation, with cover levels from £1m to £5m.
Why your home insurance probably doesn't
Standard home contents policies cover private life. The moment you're charging strangers to attend, many insurers class it as a business activity, which can mean a claim gets refused. If you host paid events at home regularly, tell your insurer, or get separate cover.
What it costs
- One-off event policies exist from specialist insurers: often £50–£100 for a single event.
- Annual PLI for a small events sideline is commonly £60–£150/year.
- Venues sometimes carry their own PLI that covers hirers ask before you buy.
The honest rule of thumb
Free picnic with friends? Insurance is overkill. Regular paid events, strangers, alcohol, or physical activity? A policy costs less than one ticket refund dispute — get one.
